TASATTUR – HIJÂB – COVERING - 5

From Risale-i Nur, examples of Hazrat Bediüzzaman and his students’ stance against the currents that work to destroy ummah’s social life and consequently Islam by establishing and spreading bid’ahs and destroying shaâ’er and Islamic lifestyle:

(Please also refer to the compilations on Bid’ah and Shaâ’er.)

The world is going through a great ma’nawî crisis. A disaster of sickness, pestilence and plague born in the Western community, whose ma’nawî pillars have been shaken, spreads worldwide. With what kind of cures will the Islamic community fight this terrible contagious disease? With the rotten, putrid and decayed bâtil formulas of the West, or with the fresh principles of îmân of the Islamic community? I see that the great minds are in ghaflah. The rotten pillars of kufr cannot hold the fortress of îmân; therefore, I have dedicated all my time only to îmân.

They do not understand the Risale-i Nur or do not want to understand it. They think I am a hoja of a madrasa sunk in a scholastic swamp. I have studied all the sciences, modern sciences and philosophy, and I have solved the most complex issues on these matters. I even published a number of books on these matters. However, I do not know these games of logic. Neither do I care about the deceptions of philosophy. I express and explain matters about the community’s domestic life, its ma’nawî existence, conscience and îmân. I work only on the foundation of tawhîd and îmân established by the Qur’an; it is the main pillar of the Islamic community. The day this is shattered, there will be no community.

They say, “Why did you annoy these people?” I am not aware. There is a terrible fire in front of me. Its flames are reaching the skies. It is my child burning in it; my îmân is on fire and burning. I am running to extinguish that fire and save my îmân. What is its importance if someone tries to trip me up on my way and my foot hits him? Does this small incident mean anything in the face of that terrible fire? Narrow thoughts! Narrow views!

Biography-629

Bediuzzaman Said Nursî was held in the village of Barla under constant and severe oppression and surveillance. The reason for his exile was to prevent the Islamic zeal in his rûh from erupting, silence him, prevent him from speaking and writing about îmân and Islam by taking him away from populated cities and throwing him to an isolated village, and prevent him from the jihad against irreligious people and from serving the Qur’an by keeping him inactive and unproductive. But Bediuzzaman was successful in doing completely contrary to their plans. He was never inactive and unproductive for even a moment; he wrote the Risale-i Nur that gives lessons on the haqiqahs of the Qur’an and îmân and ensured their dissemination in secret in a secluded place like Barla. This success and this triumph were magnificent victories because, during that terrible period of irreligion, not a single true religious work was allowed to be written; all ‘ulamâ were silenced and efforts were made to destroy them. The irreligious could not destroy Bediuzzaman; they were unable to prevent his dissemination of îmân and Islam that revived the numbed hearts and minds. This dissemination of religious works carried by Bediuzzaman was a work that no other person could have done during the twenty-five-year period of extreme oppression and absolute tyranny.

Bediuzzaman was exiled to Barla in the years 1925-1926. These years were the early period of implementation of absolute despotism in Turkey that would continue for twenty-five years. The covert irreligious committees were pushing for their plans to confiscate all copies of the Qur’an, eradicate them and destroy the Islamic rûh by repealing shaâ’er one by one. Thinking shaytanically that this plan could not be achieved, they devised a new plan that would result in the Qur’an being demolished by the hands of the future generation that would come thirty years later; they started to implement this plan. To destroy Islam, devastation and aggression unprecedented in history were carried out.

All efforts were made to break all kinds of ties between the Turkish nation and children of this country — who for six hundred years, challenged the whole world as a flag bearer of Al-Qur’an Al-Hakîm, rather for a thousand years since the Abbasids — and the Muslim identity in order to distance and deprive them of Islam, and they were indeed successful. This was not a particular event but a universal one concerning the entire Muslim world. It was a large-scale universal event concerning the îmân and belief of millions of people, especially the youths and the millions of innocents and students, and the catastrophe that would befall them in the world and âkhirah, and it was connected with the eternal lives of the people of Anatolia until the qiyâmah.

At that time, throughout those years, terrible revolutions and destructions against Islam and the Qur’an were carried out in the life of a heroic nation that, as testified by its thousand-year shining history, has held the highest exalted rank as the flag bearer of the Qur’an. The future generations and students were made to forget their honoured ancestors buried in history and the glorious past of the world’s most renowned army that spanned a thousand years of jihâd. The ground was being prepared for the communist regime by severing all their ties to the past and deceiving them with apparently glittering veiled words! In place of the most elevated principles of civilisation and the highest material and ma’nawî development already present in the haqiqahs of Islam, the covert communists, freemasons and irreligious were indoctrinating the principles devoid of nûr in the swamp of irreligious philosophy and the ideologies of intellectuals and philosophers devoid of virtue. These principles and ideologies were being taught on a very vast scale by using the education system. The main aim of the enemies of Islam, especially the British and the French, was to exploit and deteriorate the Islamic world from the material and ma’nawî aspects, and it was their plan to distance the heroic Turkish nation from any religious ties and bring Turkish nation to a state completely contrary to Islam regarding customs, traditions and morality. Unfortunately, these plans have already been put into action!

Thus, the years that Bediuzzaman Said Nursî began his Qur’anic service and his service for îmân in Anatolia with the Risale-i Nur as a hero of Islam striving self-sacrificingly were the beginning and establishment of an extremely terrible era of irreligion that had never been witnessed on earth before; therefore, it is necessary to keep such a terrifying time in mind when Bediuzzaman and his service with the Risale-i Nur are considered.

Yes, during that terrible time when irreligiousness was reigning, efforts were made to humiliate the people of religion. It was even considered to completely remove the Qur'an and destroy the aqîdah, as it happened in Russia. But when it was suggested that this would cause a backlash by the Islamic nation, they abandoned the plan and instead made the following decision: "The youth raised with our new methods of education that will be implemented in schools will demolish the Qur’an themselves; thereby all ties between the nation and Islam will be severed." The sources of all this terrible fitnah who devised these atrocious plans were the leaders and members of external irreligious currents, the antagonists and enemies of the current progress in religion.

During the most savage periods of such dhalâlah and zandaqa, Bediuzzaman Said Nursî was under constant surveillance and oppression and was under such horrible and burdensome conditions. All kinds of cruelties that Nimrods, Pharaohs, Shaddads and Yazids could not perpetrate were inflicted on Bediuzzaman, and it continued for twenty-five years. At that time, the world of Islam was materially poor and was held captive by the colonialists. All secret committees of corruption and irreligion were carrying out terrible activities both in Turkey and in the world of Islam. Their adherents were supporting them, and they were all united against Islam.

Thus the Risale-i Nur is the product of such a valuable time, just as the significance of the battles of Badr and Uhud at the Era of Bliss that were the key to Islam conquesting the world; therefore, the service of îmân, which the Risale-i Nur was the means of it, and the ma’nawî jihad of religion carried out by the Risale-i Nur are of greatness that has never been seen before in history except in the Era of Bliss. With the one hundred and thirty works of the Risale-i Nur he has written under captivity in such a terrible exile and isolation, Bediuzzaman, despite being helpless, speaks with eloquence in the masjîd of Anatolia and the world of Islam. He repeatedly echoes the lesson he has received from the Qur'an to the people of Islam. It is as if, on the top of the minaret of the fourteenth Muhammadan century and of the twentieth century AD, Bediuzzaman Said Nursî cries out to his contemporaries, humanity and the people of Islam, and he speaks to the future generations lined up behind this century as a great guide (murshid) and a grand mujaddid.

Thus, Bediuzzaman was the happiest man in the world and the most fortunate man of his age since, with the permission of Allah and through the disposal of Ar-Rabb, he prepared the grounds for a most magnificent event in history and carried out a duty with such sacred significance. There had been no change or alteration in his attire, purpose or ideals; he was never shaken, even in the minutest way. On the contrary, he carried the torch of hidâyah that would restore the beliefs of the present world and dispel the darkness. He was in a great struggle with determination because his duty and service comprised the happiness and prosperity of all humanity in both worlds.

My Final Defence To The Criminal Court Judge

بِاسْمِهِ سُبْحَانَهُ

This is my defence against the twelve-page section about me in the accusatory decree, which consists of over sixty pages:

The conclusive responses to the issues that have been raised in the decree against us are in my recorded defence in the court record. In response to the baseless and imaginary accusation labelled as decree, I am presenting my petition of objection, which consists of nineteen pages, and my final defence, which consists of twenty-nine pages. Both of these defences decisively reject and refute all points of criticism and primary accusations made by the interrogator in their indictment; these demonstratethat their accusations are unfounded. Here, I will only outline the "Five Principles"that demonstratethe foundation of this decree, the sources of the deceit of those making these accusations and the references to the quotations they have used to support their baseless criticism.

The First is a response to a baseless claim and the accusation of opposing the government’s principles, being against its regime and attempting to breach internal security against the Risale-i Nur and me by using as a pretext the fifteen passages taken from two or three sections of the Risale-i Nur, out of the total one hundred and twenty sections. I say this:

I wonder, how my scholarly defence on behalf of the haqiqahs of the Qur'an against the harmful aspects of this civilisation, not its beneficial ones — the civilisation, which is the common property of the entire Europe that the government of the republic accepted due to compulsion of the conditions of the time — can ever be labelled as opposition to the government’s principles, its regime, and acting against the revolutions of the government? Would the government of the republic stoop down to act as a defence lawyer to the harmful aspects of the European civilisation? Was the flawed, anti-Islamic laws of civilisation the main objective the government had been pursuing for so long? How can defending the haqiqahs of the Qur'an in a scholarly manner against some of the flawed laws of civilisation be deemed as opposition to the government? It is such a clear malice and such a baseless suspicion to accuse me and my scholarly defence — that I wrote over the past thirty years against the objections and transgressions of the European philosophers regarding the sacred haqiqahs of the âyahs, such as 1, and so on, that can be found in millions of tafsirs over the past thirteen hundred years and in all libraries today, and that are based on the definite âyahs of Al-Qur’an Al-Hakîm — of carrying intent to oppose the revolutions, principles and regimes of the government. I would not have considered it worthy of defence and response if it were not connected to this court of justice in here.

Moreover, I wonder how my scholarly defence against mulhids, who spread the seeds of irreligion, conflict and corruption on account of the European irreligious committees and by means of the Greek and Armenian committees that had pursued harming this nation and country for so long, can be deemed to be opposing the government? And for what reason is it interpreted as attacking the government? Is there any fairness in attributing irreligion to the government and accusing of it? While the strong principles of the government of the republic are against such irreligious people, to attribute irreligion to certain principles of the government and to interpret my victorious scholarly defence — against such people who spread corruption — of twenty years on account of this country, nation and government as using religion as an instrument of politics and making provocations against the government, what fairness would ever accept this? Whose conscience would accept it? Yes, I am declaring not only to this court but to the whole world:

I have defended and continue to defend the sacred haqiqahs of îmân against the European philosophers, especially irreligious philosophers, and those who make politics an instrument of irreligion and who disrupt public order in a ma’nawî manner. I consider the government of the republic to be an Islamic government that has recognised certain civil laws due to the compulsion of the time and is not allowing any opportunity for the currents of irreligion that harm this country and nation. I say this not to the interrogators who have carried out their duty, but in response to the suspicion and intrigue of the mulhid tyrants —which some of the interrogators rely upon — in the accusation that was presented as a decree:

You are accusing me of making religion an instrument of politics. In response to this serious slander of yours, I am accusing you of making politics an instrument of irreligion, along with proving with a hundred decisive proofs that the accusation is a clear slander; it is baseless and rotten!

Biography-Eskişehir Life-250-252

Our Ustadh Bediuzzaman Said Nursî gave the following defence speech at the Istanbul Court, and his trial resulted in his acquittal.

Our secret enemies have once again turned the courthouse against me during this noble Ramadhan, and the matter is related to a covert communist committee.

One of these: In complete violation of the law, a sergeant with three armed gendarmes was sent to me while I was on my own, alone in the countryside and sitting in the mountains. They forcefully took me to the police station, saying, “You are not wearing the hat!” In response to this, I say to all courthouses whose aim is to establish justice:

They have been tormenting my conscience for two years with their peculiar lawlessness and pretext deriving from that lawlessness, even though a man who violates the laws of Islam in five different ways and commits five unlawful deeds should be accused of being actually unlawful. They will surely suffer the punishment of it in the Supreme Court when they rise from the dead and assemble for judgment. Indeed, which legal system in the world would ever let a man, who was a recluse for thirty-five years and has never walked around towns and marketplaces, be accused of not wearing the European hat? Five provinces, five courts and the police of those five provinces have not interfered with what this man wears on his head for twenty-eight years. Especially this time, at the just Court of Istanbul, he was in front of more than one hundred onlooking police and had walked to all these places in the last two months, and no police had interfered with him. Moreover, although the Appeal Court has decided that wearing the snow caps is not illegal, all women and those not wearing anything on their heads and all soldiers and public servants on duty are not obliged to wear the hat, and although there is no benefit in wearing it, and I do not have any official duty — the hat is official attire — and although it was said that those who wore the snow caps would not be responsible, this recluse man, who does not mingle with people, does not even see his closest friends during the noble Ramadhan to avoid preoccupying his rûh with such an unlawful and ugly thing and reminding himself of the world, despite being extremely ill, does not take medicine and does not call for doctors to avoid preoccupying his heart and rûh with his physical body, was forced to wear the hat to make him look like a foreign priest and threatened legally. This would disgust anyone who had any conscience at all.

For instance, the one who forced him to wear the hat said, “I obey the order.” How can an order based on an oppressive arbitrary law be obeyed? Just as there is an âyah in Al-Qur’an Al-Hakîm that foremost prohibits resembling Christians and Jews, so the âyah 2 يَا اَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اَطِيعُوا اللّهَ وَ اَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَ اُولِى اْلاَمْرِ مِنْكُمْ commands obedience to uli’l-amr3. On the condition that it is not against obedience to Allah and His rasûl, one can act by claiming that he obeys the order. Whereas, regarding this matter, even though the laws of the Islamic tradition command the compassionate treatment for the sick and to avoid harming them, to show compassion for those in ghurbah and to avoid harming them, and to avoid causing difficulty to those who serve the Qur’an and the ‘ilm of îmân for the sake of Allah. It is against laws not in ten ways but in a hundred ways to force a recluse man, who has abandoned the world, to wear a hat worn by foreign priests, and is a transgression against the law of Islamic tradition; it is to break those sacred laws on account of an arbitrary order.

These kinds of treatment against a very sick, old, alone, poor and recluse man who is at the door of the grave and has abandoned the world for thirty-five years just to refrain from acting contrary to Sunnah as-Saniyyah leave no room for any doubt that this is a conspiracy against the country, the nation, Islam and religion under the veil of communism and for the sake of anarchy. It is also a conspiracy against those who wish to serve Islam and the country, the religious members of parliament and the Democrats who took a stance against the terrible external destruction. The religious members of parliament should be cautious about not leaving me alone in defending against this terrible conspiracy.

NOTE: If it is said to a self-sacrificing servant of the haqiqahs of the Qur’an who devoted his life to Islam, who did not rise to the Russian Commander, who deliberately passed by him three times, did not stoop and bow his head to him in response to the Russian Commander’s threat of execution in order to preserve the honour of Islam, who responded to the British Commander who invaded Istanbul and those who granted fatwas by means of the British Commander with the sentence “Spit on the shameless faces of dhâlims” and by the language of his publications and did not submit to their threat of execution for the sake of the honour of Islam, who payed no attention to the anger of Mustafa Kemal before fifty members of the parliament and said, “One who does not perform salâh is a traitor,” and who said, “I am ready to sacrifice my rûh for a single matter of Sharî’ah,” in response to the terrible questions posed by military courts instead of licking their boots, and who has chosen to be a recluse for twenty-eight years so as not to resemble kâfirs, if it is unlawfully and vainly said to him “You should look like a Jewish rabbi and a Christian priest, wear the hat as they do, and oppose the consensus (‘ijma) of all ‘ulamâ of Islam; otherwise, we will punish you.” Surely such a man, who sacrifices everything for the haqiqahs of the Qur’an, if he had a hundred rûhs, will indeed sacrifice all of them, as his biography testified, even if he was cut into pieces with a knife or thrown in Jahannam, let alone suffered worldly imprisonment or punishments and tortures.

What is the hikmah of endurance of this devoted man, who possesses extreme ma’nawî power, and his not responding destructively by using material strength against the Nimrod-like severe cruelty of the covert enemies of this country and religion?

Here, I will announce this to you and all the people of conscience: so that ninety innocent people will not be harmed due to ten per cent of zindiq irreligious people, Al-Qur’an Al-Hakîm has given him the lesson of preserving the domestic public order and security with all his strength by leaving a self-prohibitor in everyone’s heart through the lessons of the Nur. Otherwise, I could avenge my dhâlim enemies of twenty-eight years in one day. It is for this reason, on the path of preserving public order and security for the sake of protecting the rights of the innocent, he does not defend his personal rights against the people who insult his honour and dignity and says, “I will sacrifice not only my worldly life but, if need be, sacrifice my life in the âkhirah too for the sake of the nation of Islam.”

               Biography-665-668

[In response to the committee of experts, the following is the objection presented to the Istanbul court conducting the trial of the Youth Guide in 1952.]

To the First High Criminal Court

This report given by the committee of experts is completely alien to the laws and life, history and sanctities of this nation and country and is an example of the conspiracy that attacks the ma’nawî life of our twenty million brothers who live in this country, insults the government and insults the ancestors of the entire nation by vilifying this nation’s one-thousand-year history and slanders the present laws. It is not possible for a court of justice to consider it with credibility.

Here, we ask those who took the name Experts and put their signatures on this document of conspiracy: Is this nation, hâsha, irreligious? Is this nation, hâsha, the most corrupt nation deprived of religion and îmân for centuries? Did our ancestors, who gilded the shining history of this nation, follow throughout their lives the way of kufr scattering dissipation and dhalâlah to the world? Is the entire history of a nation a lie; a history that illuminated mankind with the light of Islamic civilisation, instructed true civilisation to Europe, spread the nûr of hidâyah, ‘ilm and fadhîlah to East and West by carrying the duty of being the flag bearer of the Qur’an and opened a new age in the world by conquering Istanbul; is a nation full of heroism of individuals like Yıldırım, Fâtih, Selim and Suleyman, a nation to which those heroic individuals belong, unaware of religion contrary to what is written in history? Has this nation lost their ma’nawî life? So it is a different nation that disseminated Islam; are those commanders in a different nation’s history? Does history lie? Is it a lie that as the heroes of Islam, Turks carried the honour crown of being the flag bearers of the Qur’an over all nations, or is it a lie that, with the instruction it received from the haqiqah of Islam, this nation adorned its women and girls with the ornament of Qur’anic âdâb, protected the honour and dignity of being woman and prevented them from being valueless and vile? So our ancestors, our mothers, who were famous for centuries as the Turkish heroes of Islam and to have reached the pinnacle of perfect morals, honour, rectitude and dignity as we know —contrary to what we pride ourselves in — did not follow the commands of the Qur’an; they did not consider the haqiqah of beauty as being adorned with the ornament of Qur’anic âdâb within the sphere of the tarbiyyah of Islam, but in displaying themselves naked, is it so?

O, people of conscience and the present generation who take pride in their history, heroic and blessed ancestors and its sanctities! Come and see! In the name of Islam that you know to be the very life of your life and rûh of your rûh, and on behalf of the Qur’an that lightened the universe for fourteen centuries, illuminated millions of your ancestors for a thousand years with the nûr of its sacred and Ilahî principles and guided them to eternal happiness, and in the name of your hundreds of millions of ancestors, who followed those principles of the Qur’an, and on behalf of your mothers, grandmothers and sisters, who were illuminated with the nûr of tarbiyyah of Islam on the path of preserving their high morals and honour and showed the true meaning of being woman and its true beauty through their actions, attires and lives, express your regret, critisism and rejection to these slanderers, who have written and signed this treacherous document that insults your history and your religion of Islam!

And now, in order to ensure the confiscation of the work called the Youth Guide that teaches good morals, elevated sense of honour, îmân and fadhîlah to the youth to protect them from the dangers of immorality and promiscuousness of which all illuminated people, intellectuals, many educators and patriots are now complaining, and that ensures the youth to become beneficial members of the country and nation, and that serves as the most powerful force for the happiness of this nation and country in favour of justice, public order and security, and in order to convict the esteemed author of the Youth Guide, an eighty-year-old hero of Islam who suffers severe illness due to poison and, throughout his life, has been subjected to torments in prisons because of his religious service, these slanderers are saying this:

“Bediuzzaman supports tasattur. He describes women walking around half-naked and uncovered as the troops under the command of shaytan in the war against Islam. Bediuzzaman considers it a sin for women to expose their legs and to dress half-naked in social life; he deems the half-naked and immodest dressing of the present to be an obstacle to marriage and encourages promiscuousness. According to Bediuzzaman, the true and eternal beauty of women and what beautifies them is not dressing up and exhibiting their bodies in the social life but the ornament of Qur’anic âdâb within the sphere of Islamic tarbiyyah. Bediuzzaman supports religious instruction. He says that through the instruction given by the Risale-i Nur, the convicts in prison will be reformed in fifteen weeks, as witnessed by the prisons of Denizli and Afyon and their directors, guards and judicial authorities. In Bediuzzaman’s opinion, the youth enslaved by the alluring fitnah can only be saved through the haqiqahs of religion and the lessons of Risale-i Nur on îmân. He is guilty of these ideas, and he should be convicted. Here, they are so-called professors and associate law professors called the committee of experts who teach the nation’s youth about justice, haqq and freedom.

Judges who, with the title of the representatives of true justice, preserve public law and national honour! If the lessons on îmân and the inculcations of fine morals in the Youth Guide are accepted as a crime as asserted by the report of the committee of experts, and if its author is held responsible for this great service, you have to accept the above insults, vilifications, blows that were dealt, and the disgusting slanders that were uttered against a nation, its thousand-year history, its traditional and judicial laws, its sacred religion that has been the eternal cause of its pride, and against the sacred haqiqahs of Islam, teachings of the Qur’an and honourable ancestors who, by embracing those sacred haqiqahs, proclaimed the Islamic civilisation over the world in all its glory, and against their rectitude, rights and morals. Only by tolerating and accepting these serious ma’nawî crimes can the Youth Guide accused by the so-called experts be considered a crime. Only in that way can its author be convicted and his students who published it be condemned; otherwise, the principles of legal justice and the freedom of thought and conscience would not permit their conviction and trial; it can never be compatible with the laws of democracy of the administration of the Republic that implement the principles of freedom of thought and freedom of conscience in the broadest sense.

Emirdağ Addendum-2 136-138

Then those dhâlim wretches who hold high worldly ranks said, "You did not put our headgear on your head not even once in twenty years; you did not uncover your head in front of either the former or the current courts; you presented yourself in the former attire. Whereas seventeen million people wore this attire."

So I replied: rather than wearing — by using the rukhsah of Sharî’ah and due to being forced by the law —  the attire of not seventeen million or even seven million but seven thousand European-smitten drunkards with their consent and sincere acceptance, I prefer to wear, in conformity with taqwâ and the ‘azîmah of Sharî’ah, the dress of seven billion. It cannot be said about a man like me who has withdrawn from social life for twenty-five years, "He is being stubborn; he opposes us."

Even if it is obstinacy, since Mustafa Kemal could not break it, two courts could not break it, and the authorities of three provinces could not smash it, who do you think you are to struggle pointlessly to break that obstinacy to the detriment of both the nation and the government? Even if he is a political opponent, a man who — as you have confirmed — had severed all his connections with the world and has been dead in a ma’nawî manner for twenty years would not be raised to life again, involved meaninglessly in political life that would harm considerably himself and struggle against you; it is, therefore, lunacy to fear from his opposition. Since it is lunacy to even speak seriously with lunatics, I am giving up speaking with those like you. I said, "Whatever you do, I won't feel obliged to you!" It both angered and silenced them. My final word is:

حَسْبُنَا اللّٰهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ  * حَسْبِىَ اللّٰهُ لاَ اِلهَ اِلاَّ هُوَ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ
