UKHUWWAH - أخوّة

Literally and Etymologically:

Literally, it means brotherhood, fraternity, deep affection and close companionship. Etymologically, it derives from the verbal root ‘a-kh-w (أ-خ-و), which fundamentally denotes association, partnership and warm affinity. From this same root originates the noun ‘akh (أَخ – brother).

As an Islamic Term:

Far beyond being a mere social bond, it is the brotherhood and mutual affection among mu’mins, rooted directly in the principle of tawhîd, which unites their hearts through countless ma’nawî chains of unity, such as sharing the same Creator, Prophet, Book and Qiblah. In the light of the Risale-i Nur, true ukhuwwah requires being a "muhabbet fedaisi"1 , which means sacrificing one’s insignificant personal feelings in times of personal conflict with other mu’mins, prioritising the virtues of his brother over his own nafs and ananiyyah and embracing a selfless companionship that seals the solidarity of the ummah against the destructive forces of envy, rancour, madhab-based partisanship and tribalism, solely for the sake and pleasure of Allah.

This profound state of selflessness and preferring one's brother over himself is based on the Qur’anic principle of îsâr (altruistic self-sacrifice), as highlighted in the Twentieth Flash (The Risale on Ikhlas):

وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَلَوْ كَانَ بِهِمْ خَصَاصَةٌ

“...and they prefer them over themselves, even though they are in dire need.” (Surah al-Hashr, 59:9).

Îsâr, which is one of the elevated virtues of the Sahabah, represents the pinnacle of true ukhuwwah and ikhlas, where a mu’min wholeheartedly sacrifices his own rights, comfort, the desires of his nafs and ananiyyah — a sacrifice most heroic in a time when self-interest, individualism, fame-seeking and ananiyyah reign supreme — for the well-being and benefit of his fellow brother.
