AMÂNAH امانت

Etimology & Literal Meaning: Derived from the Arabic root ’a-m-n (أ-م-ن), which signifies being secure, safe from fear, becoming tranquil and possessing peace of mind. From this foundational root arises:

• amânah: أَمَانَة – trust, trustworthiness,

• amân: أَمَان – safety, protection,

• emn: أَمْن – security,

• îmân: إِيمَان – faith, trust in Allah,

• mû’min: مُؤْمِن – the believer,

• Al-Mû’min: الْمُؤْمِن – Allah, Who is the Bestower of Security.

The core etymological hikmah lies in the intrinsic bond between all six terms: security (emn), safety (amân) and îmân as their ultimate source in the heart are granted solely by Al-Mû’min, and it is that îmân which enables the ‘abd to faithfully fulfill the amânah as the khalîfah of the earth.

As an Islamic Term:

1. The Qur’anic Foundation: Primary reference for the amânah al-kubrâ (supreme trust) is Surah al-Ahzâb (33:72):

اِنَّا عَرَضْنَا اْلاَمَانَةَ عَلَى السَّمٰوَاتِ وَاْلاَرْضِ وَالْجِبَالِ فَاَبَيْنَ اَنْ يَحْمِلْنَهَا وَاَشْفَقْنَ مِنْهَا وَحَمَلَهَا اْلاِنْسَانُۜ

“Indeed, We offered the amânah to the samâwât and the earth and the mountains, but they declined to bear it and feared it; but man bore it...”

2. The Different Aspects of the Amânah:

Amânah has been elucidated by the mufassirs through the following essential interrelated aspects:

Taklîf & ‘Ibâdah (Moral Accountability & Obligations): The moral accountability, religious duties and obligations ordained by Allah that humanity alone undertook to fulfill, encompassing obedience to both the Sharî’ah derived from Allah’s attribute of Kalâm and Takwînî Sharî’ah derived from Allah’s attribute of Irâdah.

‘Aql & Ikhtiyâr (Intellect/Mind & Free Will): The intellect and capacity for choice granted to humanity to discern and choose between haqq and bâtil.

Al-Wafâ’ & Al-‘Adâlah (Fulfillment of Rights & Justice): Faithful adherence to covenants, rights and justice toward both the Creator and creation without betrayal (khiyânah).

Ana (Self-Awareness & Ego): The human ana as a primary aspect and key of the amânah. It serves as a relative unit of measurement (vâhid-i kıyasî) and an instrument of comprehension, forming a hypothetical scale that enables the ‘abd to contrast his own limited attributes, such as partial power, knowledge and ownership, with the absolute attributes and names of Allah, thereby attaining genuine ma‘rifatullah.

3. General & Historical Meaning of Amânah: Anything committed to the charge of another for safekeeping; specifically including the sacred relics (al-Amanâh al-Muqaddasah) of the Noble Prophet Muhammad (asm) preserved under the protection and responsibility of the khalîfah.
