NÛR – نور

Literally means light, radiance or luminosity. It denotes the complete opposite of all forms of darkness (dhulmah), signifying the very source and centre of illumination, as well as the vibrant flame that dispels obscurity.

As an Islamic Term: It signifies Al-Qur’an Al-Hakîm, îmân, Islam and the Prophet (asm). It also refers to the definitive proofs of îmân, ma‘rifat, haqiqah and the knowledge of haqq at the ultimate degree of certainty (yaqîn).

Nûr is essentially divided into two distinct dimensions: The first is physical and worldly, referring to the nûr perceived by physical sight, such as the light of fire and the illumination of celestial bodies like the sun, moon and stars. The second is ma’nawî and related to the âkhirah, referring to the sublime nûr that manifests from the Name Nûr upon the universe, the human mind and heart and all layers of existence.
