TAQDÎS تقديس

Etimology & Literal Meaning: It is a verbal noun derived from the root q-d-s (ق-د-س), which signifies absolute cleanliness, purity and being free from any stain, soil or defect. Literally, it means to clean, to purify, to set apart as sacred, and to keep free from any physical or conceptual pollution.

As an Islamic Term: To proclaim that Allah — Who is Quddûs (the Absolutely Pure and Holy) — is entirely sanctified, exalted above and free from all faults, deficiencies, limits, partners or resemblance to created beings. While tasbîh focuses on negating flaws and declaring Him free from shortcomings, taqdîs affirms His utter holiness, absolute purity and perfection with profound veneration.

Just as the phrase Subhânallâh (سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ) represents tasbîh, Allâhu Akbar (اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ) represents takbîr and Alhamdulillah (الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ) represents tahmîd the dhikr representing taqdîs in the Sunnah is:

سُبُّوحٌ قُدُّوسٌ رَبُّنَا وَرَبُّ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالرُّوحِ

“Subbûhun Quddûsun Rabbunâ ve Rabbu'l-Malâikati va'r-Rûh”1
